myLot Discussions on Ella Fitzgerald Box Sets| Your favorite Ella Fitzgerald's song and why. | | This is my second music post after some time. Music remains my favorite post but it doesn't seem to attract much discussion on it. Interested to see if there are any Ella Fitzgerald's music lover out there in Mylot. First started listening seriously to Ella's music about a year ago. It was many, many years ago when i first heard a voice. A voice i was unfamiliar with on the local radio station (it was a chinese station, by the way). The voice was so captivating that i couldn't help but be mesmerized by it. I was eager to find out the name of the singer. Finally, the DJ announced it was none other than the First Lady of Song. It wasn't until a year ago that i really had the chance to listen to her songs. What struck one most was the voice. It was so warm and intimate. You could hear every word, every nuance she sing, clearly. And it was pitch perfect too, i believe. She doesn't possess those "big" voices you hear in most of today's female singer from the likes of Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston or Shakira. Or even the great Aretha Franklin. But she sings from her heart and the emotions which flowed from her every song was affecting. Many... | |
| | Ella Fitzgerald | | Ella Fitzgerald has been praised for the immaculate purity of her voice, arguably one of the, if not THE greatest female Jazz voice of all time, and yet, in terms of emotion/feeling, she is (perhaps) not rated so highly. I disagree. A version I have of "My One and Only Love" sung by Ella makes me weep every time I hear it, and I have heard it dozens of times, in fact, it is one of the key songs I listen to in order to get in tune with the more emotive side of my own nature. Has anyone heard Ella sing "Stairway to the Stars"? Sends me there every time. The beauty of her voice was almost unearthly. Ella was the tops, in fact, still is. | |
| | | How does jazz from the 30's and later compare to jazz today? | | I am a big fan of America's early jazz scene with Ella Fitzgerald and Duke Ellington. And, I was just talking with a friend of mine today about how jazz has changed. Do you think jazz is just as good today as it was back then? Why or why not? | |
| | Ella says it soooooooo good! | | "Just don't give up trying to do what you really want to do. Where there is love and inspiration, I don't think you can go wrong." -- Ella FitzgeraldI love her music and think she is a good role model.Do you like her?xoxoxoxoxo | |
| | Who likes jazz? | | John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Charles Mingus, Thelonious Monk, Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald...I feel like I'm the only person who listens to any of these guys anymore. I feel old (though I'm not even 20 yet). | |
| | Jazz drummer Louis Bellson died | | http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/29235367/[i]"LOS ANGELES - Big band and jazz drummer Louie Bellson, a master musician who performed with such greats as Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Benny Goodman and his late wife, Pearl Bailey, has died. | | Jones'n for Jazz: An Unabashedly Biased Commentary on Jazz "Must Haves" | | I think it would be rather bold to try to write to the history and current practices in and of jazz in one article. Either that or, hey, I just don't have the endurance or the attention span to attempt such a comprehensive undertaking and/or analysis. I can, however, offer a starting point that I think would provide a jazz newcomer to some delicious and EVER so exciting pieces of and moments in jazz music. I can in no way begin to know all of what is good and great in the vast discography of jazz which, by now is closing in on the century mark. You can look as far back as Scott Joplin, Jelly Roll Morton, and the heavyweights in blues and gospel, in vaudville and, yes, even the burlesque, and find some claim to the rich history and collective flavors that make up the stew we today enjoy as much as ever.I can tell you to go drink up and absorb yourself in the musical treasures of Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker, Thelonius Monk, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Oscar Peterson. I can drool on about the tones and talent of Billie "Lady Day" Holiday, Sarah Vaughan, and even the sultry and sumptuous Bessie Smith or Ma Rainey - both of very early blues and jazz... | |
